Brenner looks at the writing of four Jewish women who lost their lives during the period of the holocaust: Edith Stein, Simone Weil, Anne Frank, and Etty Hillesum. Brenner argues in all four cases their writing constituted an act of resistance to the horror and destruction around them. Brenner is especially interested in the questions of what happens to humanistic ethics in the face of barbarity, how is identity constructed in the face of racism, gender and religious complexity and how does an individual narrate a sense of self in relation to such questions. |
