Annotation

Kerkhoven examines and critiques Iris Murdoch’s Sovereignty of the Good; especially Murdoch’s understanding and, as he claims, misunderstanding of Weil. He begins with a brief overview of Weil’s thought, and then goes on to an in-depth discussion of Murdoch’s work. He returns to Weil, in the latter part of the thesis, presenting what he sees as a “four stage sequence of awareness” in her thought. Weil’s concepts of affliction and necessity are central to Kerkhoven’s discussion.
