The potential application of the ‘ethics of self’ to practical nursing is explored in this article. Drawing on the research findings of Heather Blackwell on satisfaction with nursing care from the patient’s perspective and the work of Nel Noddings as well as others including, in a very limited way, the work of Simone Weil, the author argues the best nursing care arises from a nurse who practices the ‘ethics of self’. Such an ethic implies caring for not only for others, but in a reciprocal relationship, caring for the self as well. |
