Simone Weil’s writing on the understanding of time and work in rural life in relation to spiritual development and well-being is presented. This presentation is followed by a careful examination of Weil’s critique of the understanding of the nature and purpose of manual labour, paying particular attention to her view of the role of western classical and modern scientific thinking in relation to this understanding. Central to this discussion are her ideas about the understanding of and relationship between means and ends in relation to work. The article concludes with a brief critical consideration of Weil’s remedies for addressing the problems she identifies. |
