Duran offers a thoughtful, well-balanced overview of Weil’s life and work that avoids the hagiography found in so much of the work on her. In a relatively short piece, Duran provides a remarkably in-depth analysis of Weil’s thought, making insightful comparisons to a diverse range of thinkers including Edith Stein, Soren Kierkegaard and Etty Hillesum. Duran is clearly familiar with the secondary literature on Weil and uses it skillfully in her analysis. In short, in fewer than thirty pages, one is presented with a discussion of Weil’s philosophical and religious thought that goes beyond the simple introduction one might expect, to provide some original critical insight into her work. |
