Cooper begins her discussion of Weil by comparing her to the ‘good Samariton’ found in the Christian New Testament. She goes on to emphasize Weil’s decision to remain outside the boundaries of the Christian church, a decision Cooper goes on to note that arose from Weil’s fear of ‘church patriotism’. She notes especially the importance of attention and universality in Weil’s thought. Cooper next gives a brief overview of Weil’s life paying particular attention to her mystical experiences returning to her discussion of attention and universality in the light of these experiences. The paper closes with a discussion of the legend of the ‘Fisher King’ noting Weil’s interpretation of it as an expression of attention rooted in a love of God and love of neighbor. |
