McLane-Iles is particularly interested in what she calls Weil's 'deconstruction of the myth of power'. She thus examines Weil's thought on the roots of war, first paying attention to her critique of symbol and myth as factors, which contribute to the mindset that permits war to arise. She next considers the topic of xenophobia looking in particular at Weil's opposition to and willingness to publically denounce France as a colonial occupier and for its treatment of immigrants. McLane-Iles then turns to look at views of science and the dangers of the misuse of symbols therein. Finally she turns to consider Weil's critical reflections on patriotism and nationalism. |
