Drawing on themes found in Simone Weil taken from Raimond Gaita's, A Common Humanity: Thinking about Love and Truth and Justice, Linklater discusses the idea that a shared humanity might have 'ethical significance'. In particular, he elaborates on Weil's notion of an ‘automatic' ethical response to certain ethical situations. He outlines Weil's thesis in the first three pages of the article and then goes on to consider how the themes arising from Weil fare in discussions around the possibility of international moral codes centering on a recognition of shared mental and physical suffering. |
