From a footnote found cited on p. 293, the authors notes :" Beckett's title appears to be a parody of Simone Weil's / Waiting for God/ (1950), a fact worth noting in this context because Well was heavily influenced by Herbert. So Beckett's critique of Weil's writing entails an indirect critique of the consolations commonly derived from Herbert's verse. " |
