Springsted examines Weil’s notion of apprenticeship here. Drawing on the work of the philosopher Joseph Dunne and Ludwig Wittgenstein, he begins with a brief discussion of phronesis and techne in relation to Weil’s notion of apprenticeship. He then turns to a more thorough examination of apprenticeship in terms of education again referring to Wittgenstein. He goes on to talk about apprenticeship in relation to Weil’s concepts of reading and force before discussing what he terms the ‘spiritual nature of apprenticeship’. Here he introduces Weil’s concepts of suffering and attention. He moves on to look at her thought on metaxu or intermediaries and the role they play in such apprenticeship. He next gives an illustration of how Weil’s concepts play out in an understanding of her theory of the Christian sacraments, and finally concludes the article with a brief reflection on the ‘spiritual nature of learning’. |
