This essay focuses primarily on Weil's notion of affliction, as described in her work, "The Love of God and Affliction". After outlining Weil's thought on affliction, Astell looks at its operation in the lives and work of Fr. Joseph Kentenich imprisoned in Koblenz and later Dachau during the second world war and Chiara Lubich who founded the 'Focolare Movement' in Trent in 1943. Astell argues these two spiritual leaders offer the kind of knowledge and practices necessary to prepare people to face the experience of affliction described by Weil. |
