Responding to Weil's comments on giving, found in Waiting on God, Phillips offers an interesting discussion of 'pure and impure giving'. He begins with four examples of 'impure giving', followed by a discussion of the view of God arising from such impure forms. He moves on to consider different forms of moral giving that might escape or mitigate the problems arising in the 'impure forms'. He concludes with a discussion of ways a person might see his or her life as a sacrifice to God, without falling into a master/servant relationship. |
