Drawing on the thought of Simone de Beauvoir and Simone Weil, the author critically reflects upon ‘postfeminist’ theory, which, she argues divorces the political from the personal. She uses de Beauvoir’s Ethics of Ambiguity to argue against the claim the objectification of the ‘other’ is a necessary and inevitable aspect of human relating. She uses Weil’s work on attention, relating it to the thought of Emanuel Levinas, to suggest a different model of human relating, one focusing on the call of and response to the other. Ultimately she argues good feminist theory must be relational, political and normative. |
