Annotation

Simone Weil is presented as an example of the anorexic. Weil’s antipathy towards the Jewish tradition leads the author to raise the question of a tie between Weil’s desire to sacrifice and her hatred of her origins, which seem to accompany her self-hatred. It is argued that Weil showed many of the classic symptoms of anorexia including trouble eating as a child accompanied by ongoing parental concern, denial of one’s sexuality, and obsession with control, especially of bodily desires. Her writings, filled with food metaphors bear witness to a fixation on control of food. Finally, it is argued, Weil’s refusal of food, her gender and her Jewish heritage leads one to question the voluntary nature of her death, a subject of much controversy in the literature on Weil.
